![]() ![]() ![]() You may see better Finder performance for spinning disks using HFS+ which is still supported, but you lose the convenience of APFS snapshotting, which Time Machine uses to make backing up a bit faster, and to manage cleaning up your old backups more efficiently than HFS can manage, so it kind of becomes. This is okay, it just may be slower using that TM volume in the Finder, if it's a spinning disk. Time Machine in current versions of macOS will want to use an APFS formatted volume. Unless there's something strange going on with the drive (there really won't be, the majority of the time), you can create, resize, and delete partitions in Disk Utility without disturbing your other partitions at all.Ī couple of things: did you reformat the drive when you got it? Is it a spinning drive or an SSD? ![]() You can partition an external drive to limit how much space Time Machine will use on your external drive. ![]()
